Nestled in the central highlands, Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage city and one of Sri Lanka’s most important spiritual and cultural centers. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), enshrining a tooth of the Buddha, is the city’s centerpiece and the focal point of the grand Esala Perahera festival held annually in July or August. This 10-day spectacle features hundreds of elaborately decorated elephants, drummers, dancers, and fire performers, drawing visitors from around the world. Beyond its religious significance, Kandy offers natural beauty with the scenic Kandy Lake, the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, and panoramic views from Udawattekele Sanctuary. The city’s cool climate, colonial architecture, and rich heritage make it a must-visit destination. The best time to visit is from December to March. Wear modest clothing when visiting temples and remove footwear before entering sacred spaces.
