Rise early and head to Horton Plains National Park, famed for its dramatic variety of landscapes—from windswept grasslands and cloud-kissed mountains to marshes and tumbling waterfalls. Perched at 2,100m, this is Sri Lanka’s highest plateau and the only national park in the country where walking safaris are allowed. After a leisurely morning, we take the scenic drive passing reservoirs and quaint little towns to arrive at the charming, family-friendly guesthouse nestled at the foot of Adam’s Peak, which is a convenient base for those who wish to climb up to the summit. Retire early in preparation for the trek to Adam’s Peak that commences just after midnight.

Post midnight join hundreds of Sri Lankan pilgrims and climb through the night to reach the summit of Adam’s Peak (2,243m) just in time to watch the magical sunrise over the surrounding hills. Atop the peak, depending on your faith, the giant footprint is believed to be an imprint of either Lord Buddha, Shiva, Adam, or St. Thomas. After descending, head south leaving the cooler climates to continue to the secluded beaches of Tangalle, a small secluded fishing village along the scenic south coast.
