Sigiriya is one of Asia’s most iconic archaeological wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. Rising 200 meters above the jungle, this ancient rock fortress features the famous Sigiriya Frescoes of celestial maidens, the Lion’s Gate (where only the massive paws remain), and the ruins of a royal palace at the summit. The site also includes Asia’s oldest landscaped gardens, with water, boulder, and terrace gardens showcasing advanced hydraulic engineering. Climb to the top for breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. The best time to visit is from November to April. Arrive early in the morning to avoid heat and crowds. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water. A guided tour is recommended to fully appreciate the site’s history and architecture.
