Minneriya National Park is world-famous for “The Gathering,” an extraordinary natural phenomenon that occurs from July to September during the dry season. As water sources dry up in the surrounding forests, hundreds of wild Asian elephants migrate to the ancient Minneriya Tank (reservoir), a massive man-made lake built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century.
