Yala National Park is the island’s most renowned wildlife reserve and one of the best places in the world to see leopards in their natural habitat. Located in the southeast, this vast park is divided into several blocks, with Block 1 being the most visited and offering the highest density of leopards. Beyond leopards, Yala is home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, and over 200 species of birds, including the endemic Sri Lankan junglefowl. The park’s diverse ecosystems include scrub forests, grasslands, lagoons, and rocky outcrops. Jeep safaris are the best way to explore, with early morning and late afternoon drives offering the best wildlife viewing. The best time to visit is from February to June, when the dry season concentrates animals around water sources. Hire an experienced guide and driver for optimal spotting. Yala is a must-visit for wildlife photographers and nature lovers.
