Wilpattu National Park, meaning “Land of Lakes,” is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, covering over 1,300 square kilometers of pristine wilderness. The park is characterized by its unique natural lakes, known as “villus,” which are rainwater-filled depressions that attract a wide variety of wildlife. This remote and less-visited park offers an authentic safari experience, with a high chance of spotting leopards, sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds, including the endemic Sri Lankan junglefowl. The dense, evergreen forests and scrublands create a mysterious and untouched atmosphere, making it ideal for adventurous travelers seeking solitude and a true wilderness encounter. Unlike the more crowded Yala, Wilpattu’s vastness ensures a more private and immersive experience. The best time to visit is from May to September, during the dry season when animals gather around the villus. A private jeep safari with an experienced guide is recommended for optimal wildlife viewing. Wilpattu is perfect for photographers, nature enthusiasts, and those looking to explore Sri Lanka’s untamed heart.
