Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa served as Sri Lanka’s capital in the 12th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with remarkably preserved ruins. The city features palaces, bathing pools, and temples, with the Gal Vihara as its masterpiece—a single granite rock carved into four colossal Buddha statues, including a serene 14-meter reclining Buddha. Other highlights include the Royal Palace complex, the Lotus Pond, and the Vatadage. The dry season (May–September) offers the best conditions for exploring. A licensed guide is highly recommended to understand the historical context. Use a private driver or bicycle to navigate the large site. Polonnaruwa offers a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka’s medieval golden age.
