Matara

Matara is a charming coastal city in the deep south, known for its laid-back atmosphere, historic Dutch Fort, and scenic coastline. The Matara Fort, built by the Dutch in the 18th century, sits on a rocky promontory and features a lighthouse and sea-facing ramparts. The nearby Weherahena Temple is famous for its massive Buddha statue and intricately painted stupa. Matara is also a gateway to quieter beaches like Polhena and Mirissa, as well as the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, ideal for birdwatching and lagoon safaris. The city offers a more authentic, less touristy experience than Galle, with local markets, seafood shacks, and traditional crafts. The best time to visit is from December to March. Matara is perfect for travelers seeking a mix of history, nature, and relaxation away from the crowds
