Mannar

Mannar Island, accessible via a causeway from the mainland, is a culturally and ecologically significant destination in northern Sri Lanka. It is steeped in history, believed to be the place where Lord Rama built a bridge (Rama’s Bridge or Adam’s Bridge) to rescue Sita in the Ramayana. The Mannar Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later occupied by the Dutch, stands as a weathered but evocative ruin on the coast. The Mannar Island Bird Sanctuary and Veddaikulam Tank are crucial habitats for migratory birds, including flamingos, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. The nearby Delft Island (Neduntheevu) features wild ponies, ancient Baobab trees, and a Dutch fort, accessible by a short boat ride. The region’s beaches are undeveloped and pristine. The best time to visit is May to September. Mannar offers a profound sense of discovery for history buffs, nature lovers, and those interested in Sri Lanka’s post-conflict revival.
