Perched on a massive rock 160 meters above the plains, the Dambulla Cave Temple (Golden Temple) is the largest and best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back to the 1st century BCE, it consists of five sanctuaries carved into the rock, filled with over 150 life-sized Buddha statues, three statues of kings, and two deities, all adorned with vibrant murals covering over 2,100 square meters. These paintings depict the life of the Buddha, Jataka tales, and historical events. The climb involves 360 steps, so wear sturdy shoes. The best time to visit is from December to April. Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) and remove footwear before entering. Avoid visiting on Poya (full moon) days when it’s extremely crowded.
